SA to participate in Migrants Day vigil

South Africa will participate in this year’s International Migrants Day activities. Although International Migrants Day is commemorated on December 18‚ the International Organisation for Migration’s South African office has organised an event for Thursday evening which will be held at Freedom Park in Pretoria.People will gather at the site to view Al Jazeera’s documentary titled ‘African Migrants: What’s driving them to Europe’. The documentary follows the perilous journey taken by African migrants who attempt to cross into Europe. . IOM‚ which has 162 member states and nine observer states‚ said that‚ as part of this year’s global theme‚ it was participating in the first global Candlelight Vigil to commemorate the lives that had been lost or people who had disappeared while trying to reach safe harbour.“The focus of the vigil is to highlight the plight of families separated from their loved ones who have migrated and in some instances‚ have not returned home for years.“The International Organisation for Migration cares about the challenges faced by migrants in their search for a better future for themselves and their families. IOM insists that the international community remains fully committed to saving migrants lives‚” the organisation said.“Following the recent migration challenges that led to the loss of many migrants’ lives on dangerous routes‚ IOM invites its partners in commemorating the International Migrants Day under the theme and social hashtag #iamamigrant‚” it added...
