A man arrested for domestic violence committed suicide in the Bloemhof police station's holding cells, North West police said on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old hanged himself on Monday, just hours after appearing in the Bloemhof Magistrate's Court. His case had been postponed to Wednesday.

He had spent the weekend behind bars and used string he pulled from his mattress to hang himself, said Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate was investigating the incident.
