Riky Rick dumps Apple iTunes

South African rapper Riky Rick is anti-establishment, so it should come as no surprise that he is showing Apple iTunes the finger. The hip-hop artist took to Twitter recently saying he was cutting ties with the music streaming service. This was followed by the announcement that he would be releasing his latest single, Sidlukotini, tomorrow."From now on everything I drop will only be available on my platform. F**k iTunes," he tweeted. He said he spent almost R40000 promoting links to iTunes, only to later realise that the "majority of the real fans don't have access" to the service.Speaking to The Times, Riky Rick, whose real name is Rikhado Makhado, said he was advocating for artists to take complete ownership of their music, including the distribution."Instead of building others, why not build myself. Independent artists like me don't get love on iTunes . I'm not fighting iTunes, there's nothing wrong with iTunes, they're a business but in that business Riky Rick is not a priority," he said. The Boss Zonke rapper said if more artists had their own platforms it would mean more money in their pockets. It could be that he has taken his cue from US rapper Kanye West and British singer Adele, who also refused to release their music on Apple iTunes.Similarly, Makhado's break-up with Apple iTunes seems to be partly about his fans and his bills. He said the beauty about one owning one's own platform was that it offered the same business model that other websites did as far as revenue was concerned...
