Now Cosatu enters Jozi strike fray

Cosatu has weighed in on the Pikitup strike and hopes workers will return to work by Monday. The union federation's Gauteng provincial secretary, Dumisani Dakile, said the SA Municipal Workers' Union , Pikitup and the City of Joburg were in talks facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration to resolve the dispute."We've met all parties because of the concerns and the impact of the strike ... and the effects it has on residents. We've managed to bring the parties to the negotiating table and further engage with the CCMA for the resolving of this dispute as it's a credited and respected institution," he said.Dakile said though Cosatu was confident the parties were on the brink of finding a lasting solution, the union federation was not happy that the city was sending junior managers to the talks.Dakile said the strike action posed a health hazard and blamed the failure of the city and Pikitup to implement an agreement signed in 2011.Samwu is demanding wage parity for former contract workers, saying their salaries of about R3 000 a month be adjusted to between R8000 and R10000.The workers are also demanding the dismissal of Pikitup managing director Amanda Nair, whom they have accused of nepotism...
