Krejcir's appeal bid dismissed

The Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday morning dismissed the application by Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and the men jailed with him to appeal against their convictions and sentences. Krejcir‚ businessman Desai Lupondo‚ taxi boss Siboniso Miya and Hawks warrant officers Samuel Saddam” Maruping‚ Jeff Nthoroane and Lefu Jan Mofokeng were last year found guilty of crimes including kidnapping‚ dealing in drugs‚ assault and attempted murder.Krejcir and co-accused's sentences actually lenient‚ state saysThe case related to the kidnapping and torture of Bheki Lukele in an attempt to draw his brother‚ who duped Krejcir out of R70 000 and a shipment of drugs‚ out of hiding.O'Sullivan: Hawks circleKrejcir and Lupondo were sentenced to 35 years imprisonment each while Miya‚ Maruping‚ Nthoroane and Mofokeng received 15 years each for their involvement.Lawyers for the six men argued that another court may come to a different conclusion in the case and asked Judge Colin Lamont for permission to appeal.Krejcir's advocate James Grant told Lamont on Tuesday that the prosecution failed to prove Krejcir's involvement beyond reasonable doubt and Krejcir did not receive a fair trial at Lamont's hands.The men now have the option of petitioning the Supreme Court of Appeal for permission to bring an appeal. The court will grant such a petition if it believes an appeal has a chance of success.Krejcir also stands accused in other criminal cases‚ including the trial for the murder of Lebanese drug trafficker Sam Issa‚ who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Bedfordview in 2013...
