Drag racers stone Cape cops

Drag-racers and some of their 2‚000 spectators stoned police and traffic officials when they started issuing fines at an illegal racing event in Cape Town at the weekend. City law enforcement agencies swooped on an illegal racing hotspot in the suburb of Eerste River on Sunday where they found 100 cars and an unruly crowd of about 2‚000 spectators.Police issued 315 fines.A traffic police tow truck was stoned during the operation‚ in which 26 people were arrested for drunk driving and five others for malicious damage to property and riotous behaviour."The absolute disregard for the law is simply astonishing‚" said the city’s mayoral committee member for Safety and Security‚ JP Smith."Attacks on our staff as well as the SAPS are becoming far too commonplace. I am very concerned about the type of mentality we’re encountering during many of our enforcement operations. The public is quick to point fingers at the enforcement agencies about not doing their jobs‚ yet when officers try to act‚ we see the type of response we did yesterday‚" said Smith.Fines issued at the illegal event included 54 to unlicenced drivers‚ 35 for unlicenced vehicles and 172 for speeding.The city is sponsoring legal‚ weekly drag-racing events at the Killarney race track in a bid to get racing off the streets...
