'We have no links to the Guptas'

The Department of Home Affairs is the latest organisation to be accused of engaging in suspect business practices with the Gupta family.DA MP Haniff Hoosen on Friday accused the department of awarding its visa-applications facilitation tender to VFS Global because of its links to the Guptas. But VFS Global has denied having links to the Guptas, saying it was a case of mistaken identity. The claims, the company said, had exposed it to serious reputational damage. In parliament on Friday, Hoosen alleged that, despite Home Affairs appointing VFS Global to handle South African visa applications, a receipt he received showed that money was being paid to a company called Islandsite Investments, of which Duduzane Zuma and Rajesh Gupta were directors.VFS Global Africa chief operating officer Jiten Vyas said Hoosen had not looked into the finer details. He said the misinformation stemmed from the lack of differentiation between the Gupta- and Zuma-owned Islandsite Investment 255, and the VFS-owned Islandsite Investment 309, which were in no way linked."Unfounded and untrue statements were made linking VFS Global to [the Guptas]," said Vyas.Home Affairs director-general Mkuseli Apleni also denied the claims, saying all the correct procedures had been followed when awarding the tender. He said he could not answer questions about with whom VFS did business provided there was no threat to the department."This company had to be vetted ... because we needed to know whom we were dealing with and make sure it was not a threat to the country."..
