Bus driver said to have fled scene after Joburg CBD crash

Injured passengers crawled through the windows of an overturned bus after it crushed a car in a serious collision that blocked a highway in Johannesburg’s CBD. Paramedics found the bus lying on its side in the fast lane and at least 40 injured passengers‚ many of them walking around the M1 highway at the M2 split after the collision on Monday evening.Johannesburg metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar was quoted by Eyewitness News as saying that the bus driver had allegedly ran away from the accident scene. But the owners of the Atlantic Charter and Tours bus could not verify that he fled. The bus was found lying on its side in the fast lane while the light motor vehicle was found crushed next to it‚” said emergency response service ER24.“Occupants from the bus were found walking around the highway‚ after having climbed out of the windows of the overturned vehicle. Metro services had to close the highway due to the wreckage and debris which covered the highway.“On inspection‚ paramedics found that 41 people‚ including young children‚ had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate‚” said ER24.M1 South closed just before Crown I/C overturned bus - over 40 injuries.
