Weekends a killer at hospitals

If you're reading this, you're lucky enough to have survived the weekend ... and if you did so after being admitted to a hospital, you're even luckier.New international studies found people admitted at a weekend were more likely to die than in the week. No South African data are available, but weekends are notorious for accident and injury admissions.Three UK studies have been published this week. One found "patients received only half as much specialist attention at weekends as on weekdays", with "10% increase in mortality for weekend admissions".Benjamin Bray, a University College London researcher, found an improvement since a 2010 study reported 26% higher mortality for stroke patients admitted at weekends.But researchers found that patients admitted at night had an even higher chance of dying.Nick Black, analysing the research for The Lancet, said: "We should be more concerned about patients admitted at night, in whom mortality was 10% higher than for those admitted during the day."A University of Manchester team found patients admitted by GPs had a higher chance of dying at the weekend than those admitted through emergency departments...
