Sisulu promises houses, demise of hostel living

Women living in hostels will soon become official homeowners and be given title deeds for their houses. This promise comes following Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu's visit to Mzimhlope women's hostel in Soweto, where she announced the department's plan to eradicate the hostel system.Built in 1970 for women who moved to Johannesburg from the former homelands to work, Mzimhlope is one of the oldest hostels in the township.Disgruntled residents yesterday told Sisulu of dilapidated infrastructure, faulty sewerage systems and other poor living conditions. Some have lived there for four decades.In her promise for decent housing, Sisulu said the elderly, disabled and child-headed households in hostels would be prioritised in the provision of homes.Of the 298 units currently under construction at Mzimhlope, 100 will be allocated to vulnerable people. Construction is expected to be completed by 2018.Sisulu, who participated in her department's cleaning project for Nelson Mandela Day, said she wanted to make hostels a "thing of the past".The visit also came ahead of the local government elections to be held on August 3."Hostels were created to perpetuate migrant labour. These are people who had homes elsewhere and were only accommodated temporarily to provide labour and we would like to change that because the migrant labour system is very destructive."The whole social fabric of our people has been disrupted by hostels and the mining industry in the way they have extracted labour," the minister said...
