'Victory' in Sea Point housing project

In what has been hailed as a victory for black and coloured people who travel long distances to work, the Western Cape provincial government has said it will conduct a feasibility study on the introduction of affordable housing in Sea Point. Activists, under the banner Reclaim the City, have been fighting the Western Cape government's plan to sell the land on which the Tafelberg School was built. The activists won a court settlement stopping the sale in May on a procedural issue: public participation was found to have been insufficient.Since reopening the public participation process, the provincial department of transport and public works has received more than 8,000 comments in 21 days.It also attracted 937 written objections from religious leaders, ratepayers, urban planners, academics, rights organisations and residents."The extent of the public submissions could not have been foreseen prior to the public consultation process."The large number of submissions has rendered the initially agreed one-month period for examination inadequate," said Michael Mpofu, spokesman for Premier Helen Zille. ..
