Thirty-seven school children were injured in two accidents while being taken to school in Durban early on Wednesday.
These incidents bring the total number of children hurt in accidents to more than 150 in the last five days alone.
KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert McKenzie said that in the first incident‚ in Ntuzuma‚ north of Durban‚ a taxi crashed into an embankment and then into a wall. No other vehicles were involved‚ and the cause of the accident was unknown.
“There were 13 kids injured‚ all aged between five and nine‚" said McKenzie.
In the second incident‚ a bakkie and a taxi collided in Mariannhill‚ west of Durban.
“Twenty-four school kids were injured‚ four of them are in a serious condition. Both vehicles had school children in them‚" said McKenzie.
ER24 paramedics‚ who were also on the scene‚ said that some of the children were “walking around” after the crash. The taxi was parked on the side of the road‚ while the bakkie was lying on its side.
Just five days ago‚ about 120 children were injured in two separate collisions on the KZN south coast just hours apart. In both incidents‚ buses transporting the children overturned.
“The two bus crashes accounted for 120 children‚ and this morning there were 37 injured. It’s more than 150 children hurt. It’s scary‚” said McKenzie.
