Spilling the beans: A taste of the Wild West

14 September 2016 - 10:33 By Andrea Burgener

The Hartiwood Food and Film Show is here once again. And this time it's not just yay but also yee-haa! This year the North West goes further west, with a cowboy-inspired festival, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Hartbeespoort area has unsung agricultural abundance and always throws the most glorious festival imaginable. On Friday evening it's Wild West movies and burgers at the Hartiwood movie studios, and on Saturday night there's opera and Richelieu cognac under the stars. The food factor shines on Sunday - market day. This will doubtless boast - if previous years are anything to go by - a magnificent array of produce. Gourmands and the plain greedy alike will be delighted. Most stallholders are from the area, others are coming in for the event. There's a huge array of cool stuff, totally worth the drive out there. On the liquid front, there's Ivorian chef Felix Okua with his incredible ginger juice, Loxton brewery will be selling its much loved craft beer, Black Horse has its Magaliesburg-made organic gin on offer, and there are numerous French and local wines, as well as a frozen liquid: Pierre Jourdan's sparkling wine popsicles. For coffee-heads, there's an Eritrean coffee ceremony plus local coffee roaster Bisi Bean.On the solids front, there are too many offerings to list, but here are some of the highlights: for those not scared of carbs, the esteemed Prue Leith pastry school is offering up its technically perfect almond tarts, brioche, croissants and more. This is probably your only chance to scoff such good patisserie unless you sign up for a pastry-chef course. More carbs are available in the form of brilliant organic sourdough bread from Penny Ziefert. Then again, you could throw caution to the wind and load up on organic nougat from Jakalshond, a brand that aims to raise awareness about African wild dogs, who need protection. If you were looking for another reason to eat nougat, that's surely a good one.And if all this is making Banting followers feel faint, never fear. There are plenty of carb-free options on offer, among which are excellent artisanal cheeses and sublime local olives. Braeside Butchery, well known in Joburg for its organic and free-range meats, will be present too.Sunday also features morecowboy movies, so if you suspect your offspring won't be quite as excited as you about artisanal gins and absinthe, fear not: Rango and other Wild West movies (for big and small people) will be on offer all day, at no charge.
