Almost two years after his death‚ police have admitted that they have still not made any breakthroughs in the Senzo Meyiwa case.

Bafana Bafana captain Meyiwa was shot dead in October 2014. On Wednesday‚ while briefing the police portfolio committee in Parliament‚ acting national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane said that while there had been no breakthroughs‚ the case was “on track”.

He was responding to a question from the committee's chairman‚ Francois Beukman‚ who said that high-profile cases such as this one “define your successes from a perception level”.

Phahlane admitted that the case was “complicated”‚ but said it was not fair to Meyiwa or his family for the case to be played out in the media.

Questioned by African National Congress (ANC) MP Leonard Ramatlakane about what the problems were and whether international experts needed to be brought in‚ Phahlane responded: "We need no-one foreign in this case. SAPS is more capable and will resolve it.”

He said it had emerged that the crime scene had been “compromised at one point or another”‚ and consequently a reconstruction had been done.

Phahlane also said the investigation team had also been “reviewed and changed”‚ that a multi-disciplinary team was now in place‚ and that the investigation was being overseen by the divisional head of detective services.

“We are on track‚” Phahlane said‚ before adding that he refused to talk about “imminent arrests” frequently mentioned in the media.

ANC MP Angie Moelebatsi questioned what had happened to the people who had been present when Meyiwa had been killed.

“He was shot in full view of people. He was not alone‚” she charged.

Phahlane said replied: “Yes‚ there were people there‚ but I am not going to give any information that will empower those who are trying to escape what they are responsible for.”
