Bucs better buck up for the derby

24 October 2016 - 09:49 By KHANYISO TSHWAKU

Orlando Pirates were made to sweat yesterday for their 2-1 Telkom Knockout win over Golden Arrows, but it was good preparation for Saturday's league Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs. Pirates and Baroka FC, who defeated Platinum Stars 3-1 in Polokwane yesterday, advanced to the quarterfinals of the league cup.The Buccaneers' victory ensured that both Soweto giants will enliven the cup with their presence in the quarterfinals after they were unceremoniously dumped out of the MTN8 quarterfinals. It took Pirates only 10 minutes to open their account through Mpho Makola. Arrows goalkeeper Max Mbaeva misjudged the speculative cross so horribly that he did not know whether to go for the ball or hope it stayed out.The manner in which Pirates celebrated the goal was telling. It was the first goal in open play this season from anyone other than Tendai Ndoro, highlighting Pirates' reliance on their Zimbabwean star.Arrows began to assert themselves even though clear-cut first-half chances were few. Mauricio Barrios and Wayde Jooste had opportunities but Bucs goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo was up to the task.Pirates could have, and should have, scored more than a solitary first-half goal but were indecisive.Luvuyo Memela received a delicious pass from Ndoro in the 20th minute but chose his comfortable left foot rather than shooting with his right .Ndoro had another chance in the 41st minute but his left-footed curler missed the right-hand upright with Mbaeva beaten. When Jooste equalised with a well-taken freekick in the 63rd minute, it was apt punishment for a Pirates side whose profligacy bordered on arrogance. They missed two good chances in the 58th and 60th minutes when Thabo Rakhale and Ndoro lost composure with only Mbaeva to beat.It took a magical solo run and expert finish by Memela in the 73rd minute to give Pirates a lead they deserved. Showing the composure that was missing earlier, the left-winger skimmed the Arrows defence for pace and his right-footed shot from just outside the box gave Mbaeva no chance.Although Arrows threw everything at them, Pirates' efficient rearguard ensured there would not be any further scares. More importantly, they have found form leading into Saturday's big game.Baroka beat Stars 3-1 in their Telkom KO encounter in Polokwane. The hosts took the lead after only two minutes with a headed goal by Mzwanele Mahashe, who completed his brace in the second half.Marshall Munetsi drove in a third goal and by the time Sipho Senne scored for Stars in the 90th minute, it was too little too late...
