In a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon‚ the institution announced that it had suspended the academic programme for Thursday and Friday.
"DUT management decided to suspend all lectures‚ laboratory and practical sessions‚ tutorials and assessments‚ after discussions with the SRC. This follows the serious challenges faced by many students who still require accommodation"‚ said Alan Khan‚ DUT Senior Director of Corporate Affairs. This comes after students held a protest demonstration at the Steve Biko campus on Monday.
The demonstration related to dissatisfaction over of a number of concerns including National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) registration and student accommodation.
Khan said the campus remains open for business and that extended registration will continue.
He said lectures‚ laboratory and practical sessions‚ tutorials and assessments will resume on Monday‚ February 13.
"DUT apologises to all students‚ parents and staff for any inconvenience that this decision may cause but we feel that suspending the academic programme for two days will be in the best interests of the entire University community."
