Bail decision for rogue soldier to be made next week

Judgment in the bail application of a rogue soldier accused of a bloody shooting spree in Durban’s Ntuzuma township will be delivered next week.

South African National Defence Force rifleman Thembinkosi Ngcobo‚ 26‚ appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Friday for the third day of argument in his bid for bail.

He faces charges of murder‚ attempted murder‚ kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

His attorney‚ Sizwe Cele‚ said the application was completed and that judgment was reserved until Tuesday.

Ngcobo‚ stationed at 8SAI in Upington in the Northern Cape‚ is accused of going on a rampage last month after suspecting that his girlfriend had cheated on him.

He is understood to have driven to Ntuzuma from Upington and stormed into the home of her family.

Nokwanda Mbambo was shot and another relative was wounded.

A short while later‚ after he allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend's brother to enlist his help in a search for his girlfriend‚ a policeman was wounded while attempting to confront Ngcobo. A third person was also injured.

Ngcobo spent two days on the run before arriving at his family home in Ebuhleni‚ Inanda. He was wearing civilian clothes and was allegedly still carrying his military-issue assault rifle.
