The N1 between Old Oak Road and the R300 interchange will be closed this weekend to allow for the safe demolition of the western portion of the Old Oak Road bridge.

The Department of Transport and Public Works encouraged motorists to avoid this temporary road closure by using the greater Cape Town freeway network‚ outbound: N1 – M5 – N2 – R300‚ and inbound: N7 – N2 – R300.

"Using the N2 and R300 to avoid the N1 closure will add about 15km to journey and about 10 minutes to travelling time.

"Using the local alternative routes will add about 8 km to an onward journey along the N1‚ but will take at least 30 minutes longer‚ and up to an hour in peak periods‚" the department said.

It added it is possible to use the Brackenfell Blvd and Okavango Road bridges to avoid the closure‚ "but these are expected to be heavily congested this weekend."

Local motorists in the Bellville/ Durbanville area were encouraged to use Bill Bezuidenhout Ave to get across the N1.
