If you hadn’t already felt it‚ winter has officially arrived in Gauteng.

The cold front residents in Johannesburg and Pretoria started feeling on Thursday is expected to continue through the weekend‚ with only a slight warming early next week‚ according to Dipuo Tawana‚ forecaster at the South African Weather Service.

While the maximum temperatures are expected to remain fairly constant in both cities over the weekend‚ around 18 to 20 degrees‚ the minimum temperatures are forecast to drop by a few degrees. In Pretoria‚ for instance‚ the minimum Thursday is forecast to be 7 degrees‚ which on Friday will drop to 2.

The one solace Gautengers can take is there isn’t any precipitation in the forecast or even strong winds. Still‚ this may not be the weekend to take the car to the car wash.

As the cold front is in part coming from the major storm hitting the Western Cape‚ Vereeniging in the south of Gauteng is supposed to experience the coldest temperatures first.

Tawana said early next week there will be a slight warming in Gauteng‚ but only by a few degrees at most.

In the Western Cape‚ snowfall was recorded on Thursday morning in the northern mountains overlooking the Cape wine lands.

However‚ Tawana said Gauteng has a while ahead of it before it can expect any precipitation.

“There is no precipitation‚ rain or snow‚ forecast in Gauteng for a long time‚” she said. “Maybe some rain after the 25 of June.”
