KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana has dispatched a team of officials to Lugaju High School in Impendle where a teacher was gunned down on Thursday night.

The provincial education department said on Friday that Phakamani Terrence Nxumalo was shot dead in his cottage at the school but details were still sketchy.

Provincial education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said they were waiting for more information from the district.

Dlungwane has expressed his condolences to the family of the teacher.

KZN police spokesperson Lt-Col Thulani Zwane said a case of murder had been opened at Impendle police station after a 32-year-old man was allegedly shot dead in his cottage at Inzinga area, Impendle, just before midnight on Thursday.

He said the suspect had fled after the shooting.

Nxumalo had been a maths and science teacher at the school since 2011.
