A moment of silence was observed and the SA and British flags flown at half-mast to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth at the 10th Fort Nottingham Highland gathering in Nottingham, outside Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday.

The event showcased various Highland games requiring brute strength and stamina, including: tossing the caber, tug-o’-war, walk the weight, the kilted mile, hammer throw, weight over the bar and stone put.

Thousands of people endured the scorching heat of the midlands to be entertained. 

Resuming after a five-year absence, the athletics were sponsored by Kings Arms in memory of Doug Kirton. See pictures from the event below:
