Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and malicious damage to property after a shooting at a McDonald's outlet at Main Reef Road and Hanover Street, Johannesburg.

Spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said it was reported that on Monday two people sitting in the food outlet were confronted by suspects who pointed a gun at them.

“One of them managed to escape and one was shot with a woman patron [also shot]. Both victims were taken to hospital,” she said.

Nevhuhulwi said the suspects fled the scene in a silver Toyota.

Video footage of the shooting has been doing the rounds on social media.

It shows two men entering the restaurant and accosting a man wearing a black cap who was sitting, eating and conversing with another man.

One of the suspects climbs on top of the bench next to the man, pointing a gun at him. He falls on top of him [the victim] assaulting him while pressing the gun against the man's body.

The suspects can be heard demanding a gun from the victim.

“Give [me] that gun,” said the suspect.

“Shoot me!” the victim replied.

A shot goes off and people inside start screaming and running out.

More than three shots go off and the men run out leaving the wounded man inside.

McDonald’s South Africa confirmed it was aware of the incident, saying it took place at McDonald’s in Selby on Monday.

“The safety of our customers and crew is important and we express concern and support for the people affected by this incident.”

An executive in marketing, supply chain and technology at McDonald's, Daniel Padiachy, said they are co-operating with police in the investigation.

“We would do everything in our power to provide them with information that will assist in the investigation. It is in the best interest of the investigation to only share information with the police to avoid compromising their investigation. We have started our internal investigation to improve safety at our restaurant,” said Padiachy.
