Porsche is recalling more than 1200 of its model 911CarreraS sports cars because a fuel line can come loose and cause a fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US said on its website on Saturday that the line can come apart at a connection and leak fuel, which could cause loss of power and a crash, or a fire.

The car maker said it does not know of any fires or accidents related to the fault.

The 2012 cars have a starting price of more than $96000 (about R741380). Porsche said the problem can occur because a coolant pipe can touch a connection on the fuel line and loosen it.

Dealers will either replace the fuel line or tighten the connections, and install a spacer to keep the lines apart.
