Police in New York are on the hunt for a woman who left her baby on a subway platform in Monday morning.

Onlookers witnessed an unidentified African-American woman pushing her 7-month-old baby’s pram out of a train at Columbus Circle station before darting straight back on just before the doors shut, reported Mail Online.

A bystander stayed with the infant for 20 minutes waiting for the mother’s return, but when no one came to claim the child the police took her to Transit District 1 Police Station.

The baby had a rash on her and bandages on her hand, but otherwise appeared in good condition. The report states that it is unclear as to why the mother intended to leave her child or whether something spurred her to flee.

Neither mother nor child has been identified as yet.
