Democratic Alliance national spokeswoman Lindiwe Mazibuko has announced that she will stand for the post of parliamentary leader of the party.

"I am very pleased to formally announce that I have decided to stand as a candidate for the position of parliamentary leader in the mid-term caucus leadership elections," she told reporters in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The post is currently held by DA MP and Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip.

Mazibuko's move follows recent news reports that she has been lobbying members of the DA's 77-member caucus for their support.

According to the same reports, citing copies of a leaked letter, Trollip is preparing to defend his position.

Elections for the post are set for October 27.
