The Speaker of the Gauteng legislature Lindiwe Maseko requested that her office buy groceries amounting to thousands of rands, but they were for her office according to a report.

Legislature spokeswoman Nondumiso Msomi told  the Star that the grocery list had not been for Maseko's personal or private consumption, but that of her office.

"In her capacity as the Speaker of the Gauteng legislature, the speaker hosts local as well as international dignitaries from time to time, and as is tradition, guests are offered refreshments," Msomi told the publication.

The shopping order, made in March last year, was sent to the City Spar in Meyersdal where groceries consisting mainly of snacks and drinks were bought.

Some of the food items were honeyed ginger tea times 48, Jacobs Kronung coffee times six, dried wors barbecue biltong times 24 and chilli cashew nuts times 24.

Hard drinks included two cases of Glenfiddich 15-years-old and two cases of Meerlust wine, but these were not part of the items on the Spar list.

The groceries totalled R10 998 for everything excluding the drinks.

The newspaper said the list was detailed and included personal items such as Rennies, Gaviscon, sanitary pads, tampons and tissues.

The order was signed under "the head of finance, Willie Sambo".
