A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing to death the son of Minister of Defence and Military veterans Nosiviwe Nqakula in Johannesburg.

Gauteng police spokeperson Lieutenant-General Lungelo Dlamini said the 24-year-old would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Details of the attack on Saturday night were not immediately available, however Dlamini said Chumani Nqakula was stabbed in the upper body.

The ANC sent condolences to the family of Charles, President Jacob Zuma's former political advisor and former Cabinet member, and his wife Nosiviwe.

"Chumani Nqakula, the second of Cde Charles and Nosiviwe's four children, met his sudden and untimely death following an assault in Johannesburg, Gauteng last night [Saturday]," African National Congress spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

"Our prayers and thought are with Chumani's family and friends and as we send our deepest sympathies to them, we hope and believe that fond memories of their son and friend will bring comfort during this difficult time of loss."

Charles Nqakula was previously the minister of defense and later the minister of safety and security. He is currently high commissioner to Mozambique.
