Sugar cane burned and stones were thrown as the ANC Youth League marched to Ballito Junction.
The ruling party's youth league was protesting over the shopping mall's employment policies, demanding that the developer hire local youths.

ANCYL KZN secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo claimed that it was not the protesters who set fire to the sugar cane, saying the league had no idea who did it.
He also complained that the police had loaded their guns with rubber bullets.

When the protesters arrived at the mall, they threw stones at the junction and broke through the mall's parking booms.
