Igesund's problem child

Gordon Igesund will extend his own record for coaching the most South African football clubs when he takes charge of Supersport United for the first time tomorrow. They will host Platinum Stars at Atteridgeville.

It will be the 15th top-flight club for the 58-year-old, whose coaching career goes back 30 years when he served as both a player and coach for Witbank Black Aces.

Igesund also holds the record for the most number of games coached in the top flight.

Tomorrow's game will be his 753rd on the bench. During that time he has secured 318 wins, 201 draws and 233 losses.

His last local club was Moroka Swallows, who finished runners-up in 2012 before he left to replace Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana coach.

His four league titles with four different clubs is a unique achievement in an established league, but he also had a taste of what life is like at the other end of the table.

He had three spells in charge at African Wanderers in 1987, 1991 and 1995 and every one of those seasons ended in relegation.

Igesund is known for taking on problem teams and turning them into champions.

One example is his success with Swallows. He took over the reins of the team in late 2010, when they faced almost certain relegation.

He now takes over a United side that has lost four of its five league games so far this season.

One player who is more than keen to prove himself on a bigger scale is Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus, who failed to make the cut for the national squad that played the Super Eagles on Wednesday night. He was infuriated that the team botched a rare opportunity to beat the Nigerian side in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier that ended 0-0 in Cape Town.

Said Erasmus: "I felt we were very unlucky and a little too excited in front of goal [on Wednesday night], but the way we played makes me feel like I can't wait to be part of that Bafana squad.

"I was happy for the guys who got the call-up and I was happy with the win over Sudan and draw with Nigeria."

Erasmus will have a chance to prove his value when Orlando Pirates face Wits at Orlando Stadium tomorrow night.

There is no doubt that with five goals in all competition already this season - and three in the past two league games - he will be a very real threat to Gavin Hunt's men.

Kaizer Chiefs will take on University of Pretoria at Soccer City tomorrow, and PSL coach of the month for August Stuart Baxter said his team needs to regroup after their two-week Fifa international break.

Baxter has guided Amakhosi to a perfect start with eight league and cup wins, top of the league and a place in next weekend's MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates.
