Kenya victory boosts Blitzboks

Kenya ended a wait of more than a decade to claim their maiden World Sevens Series title in Singapore yesterday and kept the Blitzboks in with a chance of the overall title.Kenya's 30-7 final win over series pacesetters Fiji was deserved, and by denying the islanders the full complement of 22 log points, South Africa stayed in touch with just two tournaments remaining.I can't blame the players for lack of effort. They left nothing outFiji now have 147 points on the standings, with SA, who collected bronze in Singapore, up to second with 139 points while New Zealand dropped to third on 135 points. With tournaments in Paris and London in May, SA's chances of claiming the overall title are slim. The Blitzboks defeated Kenya 14-0 in their pool match and also saw off New Zealand 12-7 in the quarterfinals but fell 26-21 in the semifinal against Fiji. For the Blitzboks it was a seventh semifinal appearance of the campaign in eight tournaments, but once again, just as they did in Sydney, Las Vegas and Hong Kong, failed to progress to the final. They managed to rally to beat Argentina 28-0 in the bronze medal match to collect a vital 17 log points. But having to play New Zealand and Fiji back-to-back in the play-offs was a tough task."The margins in sevens are so small and when we play Fiji or New Zealand, it is always just one try that proves the difference," Blitzbok coach Neil Powell said."That Fiji tackle in the corner flag on Stephen Dippenaar, preventing him from scoring what probably would have been the match-winner, shows how tight the margins are."I cannot blame the players for lack of effort. Whenever they take the field, they really play for that jersey and each other. They left nothing out there," Powell added...
