Paarl BHS produce record eight SA schools players

22 July 2016 - 16:29 By Craig Ray

The players were all members of the Western Province team that won the unofficial ‘final’ at Craven Week last Saturday. As a result it wasn’t surprising that Western Province dominated selections in the SA Schools team. Thirteen of the 26-man squad came from Western Province with Paul Roos and Paarl Gym each providing two players and Rondebosch the other. The eight players was a record number of representatives from one school in an SA Schools squad‚ surpassing the mark of six‚ which Bloemfontein’s Grey College achieved three times – in 1981‚ 2009 and 2010. Paarl Boys High captain Salmaan Moerat was also chosen to lead the national under-18 team. He was one of six forwards from the Boishaai pack in the SA Schools team. There was also an under-18 SA Academy side chosen‚ which will be captained by Affies and Blue Bull skipper Lourens van der Schyff. The SA Schools and SA Schools A teams will take on their counterparts from England‚ Wales‚ France and Italy from 12 to 20 August in Cape Town and Paarl‚ with the teams set to battle it out in three rounds of matches. Moerat‚ who led Western Province to a 27-20 victory against the Golden Lions in the final match of the Coca-Cola Craven Week‚ is one of seven players in the SA Schools squad that featured in the tournament last season‚ while Blue Bulls fullback Abner van Reenen retains his place in the SA Schools A team. The other players who were selected for the SA Schools team for the second successive season‚ or promoted from the SA Schools A team‚ are centre Manual Rass‚ flyhalf Damian Willemse‚ looseforward Khanya Ncusane (all from Western Province)‚ utility forward PJ Steenkamp (Blue Bulls)‚ centre Wandisile Simelane (Golden Lions) and Khwezi Mafu (Eastern Province). The coaching staff and management teams of the SA Schools and SA Schools A teams‚ meanwhile‚ will be named in due course.
