Chicken Inn licking wounds ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns clash

Mamelodi Sundowns’ African Champions League opponents Chicken Inn are reeling in the wake of a disappointing build-up to their showdown in the continent’s elite club competition. The side from Bulawayo travelled to Zambia to take part in a high-profile club tournament as coach Joey Antipas sorted through his options ahead of the meeting with Sundowns. But he found more questions than answers. The Gamecocks’ last competitive fixture was in mid- December in the Zimbabwe cup final when they lost to Highlanders to spurn the opportunity for a domestic league and cup double. After an opening 2-2 draw against Zambian side Zanaco‚ Chicken Inn lost 3-1 to Tanzania’s Azam in their second match in the pre-season tournament. They then ended their stay in the country with a 2-0 loss to Zambian champions Zesco United as their defensive frailties were again exposed. It is something that Antipas admits is a big concern with free-scoring Sundowns next up for his side in Bulawayo on Saturday.“Obviously I’m disappointed with our failure to win and the manner in which we’re conceding goals‚” Antipas told reporters. “We gave away soft goals. The good thing is that we’ve realised our mistakes and now have to attend to them before the Sundowns’ game.“I feel our concentration levels were generally appalling and our movement wasn’t that quick. We enjoyed passing the ball around and were comfortable with the ball in most matches‚ but failed to effectively use that possession or dominance. We’ll go back home and work on our mistakes.”Antipas also was critical of his players’ match fitness and is sweating over a number of injuries to top players.Influential captain Danny Phiri‚ Clement Matawu‚ Elvis Chipezeze and Lawrence Mhlanga did not travel to Zambia and are unlikely for the first leg against Sundowns.“They will join us on Monday and we will assess them but I doubt that they will be part of in the first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns‚” Antipas said.“The injuries are a cause for concern for us as players like Danny and Clement are senior players with a lot of experience. But we just have to work with what we have.“These players are the most experienced and they are our key players.”Chicken Inn have been boosted by the signing of former University of Pretoria winger Obadiah Tarumbwa and defender Teenage Hadebe‚ who had trials with Ajax Cape Town before the start of this season...
