Thamsanqa Mkhize's 85th-minute goal gave Maritzburg United a crucial 1-0 home win against Ajax Cape Town and‚ more importantly‚ made sure the relegation mini-league will be decided on the final day. They will be travelling to Potchefstroom on May 21 to face Jomo Cosmos and the winner of that game will stay up.Ajax Cape Town were reduced to 10 men when Abbubaker Mobara was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 74th minute. However‚ they held out for nine minutes before Mkhize's wonder strike.PSL relegation battle goes down to the wire as Arrows beat CosmosMissing star striker Charlton Mashumba‚ Jomo Cosmos never had the firepower to truly trouble Lamontville Golden Arrows‚ who enjoyed the freedom to edge a 1-0 advantage over their relegation-threatened opponents. While Pietermaritzburg was blessed with a spectacular sunset‚ fans would have hoped for similar football. However‚ the reasonable crowd were served up a mediocre first half which showed up Maritzburg's inexplicable lack of urgency. They had some great chances through Evans Rusike‚ Kurt Lentjies and Thamsanqa Mkhize but Ajax Cape Town stopper Brandon Petersen was equal to the task. Unless Ernst Middendorp's side played within themselves in the first stanza to avoid their customary second half meltdowns‚ they were down on energy. At times they looked a team who had already resigned themselves to relegation. They also got on the wrong side of Victor Gomes' strict officiating. Kwanda Mngonyama‚ David Booysen and Kurt Lentjies were all yellow-carded for offences that other officials would have just talked them out of.When it comes to the application of the law‚ Gomes' is second to none but robbed Maritzburg of their nominal midfield aggression.Ajax played the better aesthetic football and created the best scoring opportunity through Prince Nxumalo in the 41st minute. However‚ his snap shot from just outside the box was well saved by Virgil Vries.Maritzburg were far better in the second half but goals were not forthcoming. Rusike and Brian Onyango had excellent chances in the 64th and 75th minutes respectively but they could not locate the net.Lentjies had an even better chance five minutes later‚but his shot went tamely wide. As disjointed as Maritzburg's attack was‚ the pressure of playing 10 men told on Ajax when Tumelo Mogapi was fouled just outside the box.Up stepped Mkhize with his beautiful freekick to set up a mouthwatering final day on May 21. - TMG Digital..
