MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Netcare human resources director Peter Warrener
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Netcare human resources director Peter Warrener

Netcare was recently named the best employer in the healthcare industry by the CRF Institute; what does this mean to the company?

It means that we are on the right track and we see it is as positive reinforcement that we have got the right policies and practices in place. However, given the nature of our industry, which is about providing the highest levels of quality care and compassionate service, we will always strive to ensure that our internal working culture is optimal for achieving these goals. We see the award as recognition that serves to encourage us to continue with what we are doing rather than congratulating us for a job completed.

What makes Netcare a good employer?

If the mantle of "a good employer" is something that emanates from ground level, then all our business units, paramedic bases, clinics and hospitals and the policies and guidelines of the company are there to support the day-to-day practices of the people on the ground. If this is the case, then I would believe that we have the fabric required to make us a good employer. I would like to believe that a result of the "good employer" label is that our people like coming to work and gain satisfaction through making a positive difference in the lives of those we care for.

Does Netcare have an employee wellness programme?

In line with our commitment to our employees, Netcare has partnered with ICAS, a provider of employee assistance, wellness and wellbeing programmes, to ensure that all employees and their families have access to professional support and assistance for a full range of psychosocial challenges. The employee wellness programme incorporates both responsive treatment and proactive risk mitigation interventions.

How do you attract and retain good talent?

There are specific challenges to working in the healthcare environment, but I believe the rewards are bountiful. Where else can you get the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of your clients every day?

What do you look for when recruiting?

Attitude, caring and competence are the keys for a successful match between Netcare and prospective staff members. People who identify with our values and can relate to living them out daily. For non-nursing functions, we look for people who have empathy and an appreciation for the unique industry in which we work.
