Islamic banking and business practice came under the spotlight at an international conference in Durban this week.

The International Conference on Islamic Business hosted by the Minara Chamber of Commerce featured seven foreign financial specialists from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, as well as local experts.

The conference and exhibition with a theme of "towards socioeconomic transformation" started on Friday and ends today at the NMJ Islamic Centre in Morningside, Durban.

It focused on training businesses to establish new business networks and create successful allies internationally.

A gala banquet took place last night to commemorate the ANC's centenary celebrations and to pay tribute to South Africans who have attained remarkable achievements.

Solly Suleman, president of the Minara Chamber of Commerce, said that all participants will leave the conference with solutions that will affect economic developments in SA.

"We are confident that this conference will result in the most effective knowledge-sharing forum on Islamic Business held in South Africa to date.

"Everyone will leave knowing how to impact our economic systems, the management of businesses, communities at large and socioeconomic developments.

"We hope that the government takes cognisance of what we are building and will hold hands with the community."
