More than 200 braved the chilly weather on Thursday morning for a hot "cup of joe" at Starbucks’ first South African store in Rosebank.

The line snaked onto the pavement as Joburgers and a few Pretorians lined up for a taste of the American brand.

Entrepreneur Peter Maree woke up at 4.30am to make his way to Rosebank just for the launch of the store and try a cup of coffee. Maree said that he likes the brand and became familiar with it when he worked in the US and was interested in the company.

“I want to feel the vibe …it’s an iconic brand and now we get it in SA‚” said Maree‚ who added that he also wanted to take a few selfies at the store.

The store said that within the first hour of opening more than 120 cups of coffee had been made.

Taste Holdings CEO Carlo Gonzaga‚ who brought the brand to South Africa‚ said the tastes of local customers were taken into consideration so products like rooibos tea were also on the menu.

When approached by TMG Digital‚ Keitumetse Mogaingoane had just joined the line to get into the store but was undecided on whether she was going to stick it out as she had to attend a tutorial at university.

The store opened its doors at 7.30am and was planning to remain open until 11pm on Thursday night.
