Two stalwarts of the stage recognised at Fleur du Cap awards

Two veterans of the South African stage were honoured at the 2015 Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards in Cape Town on Sunday. Actor‚ director and playwright John Kani‚ 72‚ was given a lifetime achievement award‚ and Sandra Prinsloo‚ 68‚ was named best actress for her role as Irina Nikolajewna Arkadina in "Die Seemeeu".In the play – an Afrikaans translation of The Gull by Anton Chekhov - Prinsloo played a successful actress who knows her star – and her body – will not be shining forever.Eighty-six productions were eligible for 2015 Fleur du Cap awards. In addition‚ 66 student performances were considered for the most promising student award‚ won by Kiroshan Naidoo.Awards were presented in 18 categories‚ and two special awards went to Kani the Zabalaza Theatre Festival.The festival was honoured for providing a platform for artists who want to venture into acting‚ stage management‚ writing and directing.Sunday’s ceremony at the Baxter Theatre was directed by Thando Doni and hosted by Africa Melane and Lynelle Kenned‚ who was named best actress in a musical for her role as Maria in the Fugard Theatre’s production of West Side Story.The judges were Melane‚ Beverley Brommert‚ Christine Moritz‚ Eugene Yiga‚ Gillian Mitchell‚ Herman van der Westhuizen‚ Johan van Lill‚ Marina Griebenow‚ Peter Tromp‚ Steyn du Toit and Tracey Saunders.
