Kelly Khumalo and her family have been the subject of Twitter trends and public scrutiny since the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial began.

Meyiwa was shot dead at a Vosloorus property in October 2014. The case was postponed to May 2023.

The singer was among the five people in the Vosloorus home during an alleged house robbery when the soccer star was gunned down in 2014.

We look back at moments the star made claims regarding her ex-lover and father of her daughter.

Kelly claimed ‘nobody knew Senzo’

In an exclusive interview with eNCA, Kelly, who sat alongside her lawyer Magdelene Moonsamy, held nothing back.

While attempting to drive home the point that she had “nothing to gain” from Senzo's death, Kelly said: “Nobody knew who Senzo Meyiwa was until he was attached to the brand ‘Kelly Khumalo’.”

“You can’t take that documentary seriously.

In April a docu-series, Senzo: Murder of a Soccer Star aired on Netflix. The documentary sought to unpack the truth behind the high-profile murder of late Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

In one of the episodes of her reality show Life with Kelly, she said she did not take the docu-series seriously.

“You can't take that documentary seriously. Remember they knocked on our door and we declined and had to have Magdalene involved. You remember they interviewed me under false pretences?” Kelly said, speaking to her publicist.

Teffo’s desperate for attention

The singer was emotional when reflecting on how Teffo, representing four of the five accused, said during the trial in June an “eyewitness” would testify Kelly allegedly shot Senzo “by mistake”.

Kelly claimed the advocate was using her name for clout.

“That advocate is desperate for attention, and he knows every time he mentions my name, he trends,” she said.

“It's really tough. It's exhausting. It's emotionally draining,”

Kelly said she found that moment distasteful because the allegation was nowhere close to the truth.

“This was very disturbing. Extremely disturbing. How desperate can someone be to try to put me in jail for something I did not do.

“I'm a strong person. Very strong. But such accusations do hit deep. And they did. As much as I know this is hogwash. Can you be that dirty as a human being?”

Kelly reveals she received death threats

Kelly shot straight to the top of the Twitter trends when a video of her being surrounded by bodyguards went viral on socials. She did not address the tweets, but an episode of her explaining why she hired a bodyguard aired on her reality show.

“How Thingo’s father was murdered is still a mystery to me. I’ve received a few death threats [since]. My last gig in KwaZulu-Natal, I received a threat two days before that they were going to kill me. Security for me is literally everything," she said in her video diary.
