Once it airs, Idols SA season 19 will be the finale for the franchise in Mzansi and radio jock Sizwe Dhlomo has come to its defence after fans shared their views.

The news that the show has been canned made its rounds on Monday and drew mixed reactions from viewers.

Taking to his timeline Sizwe shared his thoughts and put in a good word for the singing competition.

“Guys, Idols made stars. Maybe ke you didn’t like them or something, you can say that but they made stars,” he wrote.

In his mentions some of his followers agreed.

“Yip! Even those that didn’t necessarily win. And then there are those who broke into other art form like acting as a consequence of being on Idols... Sihle Ndaba and Gail Mabalane come to mind. I’m sure there’s many other examples. But ke people choose to focus on the negatives,” wrote one.

“Say Millions. Idols made millions by dragging the competition to be so long that it became a big channel for marketing and advertising. DStv subscriptions went up because of Idols. Went down when people realised it actually serves for the brands more than anything,” added another.

Y-FM breakfast show host DJ Ankletap put a spanner in the works when he tweeted that the show failed to create superstars.

“21 years and zero superstars created,” he wrote.

Idols took to its own Instagram timeline to announce the news of its cancellation.

“Have you heard the news? The upcoming #IdolsSA season 19 is the final one. Watch this space for updates about how to audition.”
