Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, popularly known as DJ Maphorisa, appeared at the Randburg magistrate’s court on Monday after being apprehended for allegedly assaulting Thuli Phongolo.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed this with TshisaLIVE in an official statement.
“A 35-year-old South African musician is expected to appear before Randburg magistrate’s court for allegedly assaulting his partner. The suspect was arrested on Sunday, May 7 2023, after a case of assault common was reported at Sandton police station.
“It is alleged that the suspect assaulted the victim at an apartment in Sandton on Sunday.”
A statement shared by the NPA Phindi Mjonondwane revealed Maphorisa assualted Thuli by "hitting her with open hands and strangled her after she confronted him about an incident that happened the previous night where he was booked to perform."
The court granted Maphorisa to be released on R4,000 bail after Thuli filed a withdrawal statement agreeing the DJ be released, and the case has been remanded to June 14 for Maphorisa to lodge representation to the NPA.
According to a statement seen by Sunday World, Thuli told the police the fight ensued when she confronted the DJ about a squabble that transpired between them at a gig on Saturday night.
“I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig. He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” Thuli said in a statement.

Since 2021, videos of Thuli and Maphorisa spotted holding hands and intimately dancing together at events first sparked rumours the stars were dating.
When responding to the speculation, Thuli took to her Twitter timeline saying she is single and not dating anyone.
“Y’all stop. We’re not dating! I’m so done with you guys!” she wrote.
“And the truth remains, I’m single.”
