Seasoned actor Thapelo Mokoena says since becoming selective with the characters he plays on screen he is moving away from romcoms.

Calling it a “method to the madness”, the actors wants his acting career to take a different direction which means taking roles that challenge him.

Thapelo recently starred in Netflix's seven-part series Fatal Seduction as Leonard, and told TshisaLIVE his decision to turn on a new leaf came after he shot a five-part crime thriller original series Trackers.

“I found the scripts I shot told a different story. I did one or two romcoms and I found those romcoms gained more popularity than most of the work I had done, which is grittier, edgier and I didn’t want that to be the defining tone of my offering.

“I immediately spoke to my agents, locally and internationally, and I told them this is the direction we are going to take. If there is nothing in the mix for us and if we don’t take anything, we don’t have work and that’s OK.”

Thapelo said the law of attraction worked for him because he started receiving the scripts he wanted.

With a career spanning 21 years, Thapelo said he still has more to offer.

After Trackers, he starred as Errol on the Showmax Original’s horror series Pulse, and then season three of Bullet Proof .

In the show Thapelo and actress Kim Engelbrecht play a South African couple Megan and William whose child is kidnapped.

“When I shot Pulse, it was the script I wanted. It was a very dark pretty story, we shot it in Mauritius. I shot Bullet Proof, a British series, with myself and Kim Engelbrecht and suddenly it became a role I wanted. So at some point as an artist, it is important to have a certain idea of the career you want, the tone of career you want to set and the DNA you want to present,” sad Thapelo.

“When you think of Denzel Washington and the projects he has done you understand why he had to do them, and when you watch them you are like ‘I don’t know who else could have done it’. It is important to carve that and I think my artistic journey and being that way from day one and 21 years later we are still on the boat. There is a method to the madness.”
