The red carpet was rolled out for women in showbiz at the second Basadi in Music Awards at Joburg Theatre in Johannesburg.

The awards ceremony didn't go off without any glitches. Notably the media had a hard time getting entry to the theatre to watch the show, but were finally 'allowed' in.

Like any other 'toddler' these were teething problems that we hope can be resolved in its third instalment. These are after all the only awards in Mzansi exclusively for women and we tip the hat to the founder Hloni Modise Matau.

The ceremony kicked off on Saturday evening with performances that took us on a trip down memory lane and everyone was up on their feet jamming to all the songs.

That opening by Andile Gaelesiwe, Khanyo Maphumulo, Tshedi Mholo, Winnie Khumalo and Tamara Dey plus the Gusheshes on stage set the tone and made us forget how getting in was such an admin nightmare.

At the helm and holding us down was media personality Unathi Nkayi. By far this was her most memorable hosting gig. She made it look so natural and easy. They couldn't have picked a better host. She kept the audience captivated, engaged and zoned into the whole show.

Unathi, however, was in the shoes of previously announced host Khanyi Mbau. No reason was given for the sudden change of hosts.

Though I give them a zero for admin, the production was a 10 out of 10. The women only band was impressive.

Musicians MalehMpho Sebina, Vicky Sampson and Msaki also performed on the night.
