Production on Mzansi Magic’s much-anticipated new drama series, Queen Modjadji, is well under way. To bring the fascinating story of SA's legendary Rain Queen to life, the series has cast a mix of experienced, well-known talent and some fresh new faces, opening the film and television industry for the up-and-coming young creatives.

The cast was selected based on their ability to master the Khelobedu language and to closely portray the historic figures that form a significant part of the story in the lead-up to Queen Modjadji’s reign.

In February, when Mzansi Magic announced the production of the Queen Modjadji story, South Africans expressed their intrigue and excitement, largely because this is a story that is yet to be told extensively from an African perspective.

Mzansi Magic is confident that the cast that will deliver and depict the story’s characters respectfully and in an epic and unforgettable fashion.

Meet some of the cast of Queen Modjadji

Ngelekanyo Ramulondi made her first on-screen appearance on Mzansi Magic's S'phiwo, but you might also recognise her from roles in Fatal Seduction and Noughts + Crosses. She'll be starring as the young Queen Modjadji, 14-year-old Maselegwani.

Masutang Rasekele is one of the fresh new faces in the cast. She'll be playing Dzugudini, the daughter of the Rain King and mother of Queen Modjadji. Dzugudini is a crucial part of the Lovedu's history as she was instrumental in saving the kingdom from a catastrophe of drought.

Helen Lebepe has several acting roles under her belt, including a role on Mzansi Magic’s Saints & Sinners (now on Showmax). She'll play the role of Raisibe, who gives Queen Modjadji a view into the real world of her people and grows to become her confidant.

Thabo Bopape is a film director and producer who's equally comfortable in front of the camera; he's appeared in numerous television series, feature films and commercials. Bopape stars as the Supreme Mambo/King of the Karanga Kingdom, who is obsessed with becoming the greatest rainmaker and is racing against time to fix his mistakes and restore the balance as required by his ancestors to end a severe drought.
