Zimbabweans have taken  to Twitter to demand the release of investigative journalist and filmmaker Zenzele Ndebele, who was arrested during a meeting between civil society organisations and President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Reports by Zimbabwe media claimed the meeting was held at Bulawayo State House on Thursday.

Ndebele was arrested on charges of contravening  section 43 of Zimbabwe's Criminal Law Code, which prohibits the possession of dangerous weapons at public gatherings.

This after used canisters of teargas were found in his car. Ndebele, claimed they were from previous protests and said he planned to use them in a documentary.

Zimbabweans claimed that Ndebele was being punished for his investigative work, Gukurahundi, which focused on the killings  of thousands of Ndebele people, allegedly by the Zimbabwean army during Mnangagwa's tenure as the head of state security.

Furious Zimbabweans took to Twitter to demand Ndebele's release, under the hashtag #FreeZenzele.
