Children have accused nuns in a New Hanover convent near Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal of beating them, police said.

Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said the convent housed 24 children of both sexes. Five of them reported the beatings.

Two nuns and a sister were expected to appear in the New Hanover Magistrate's Court in connection with the complaints.

"Police are still taking more statements from learners," Jeevan said.

The children had been taken to a place of safety.

KwaZulu-Natal social development spokesman Sifiso Buthelezi said MEC Meshack Radebe had decided to shut down the convent.
