Sixteen people were injured when a bus overturned on the R71 Tzaneen Bypass, outside Polokwane, in Limpopo on Thursday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said three of the people were seriously injured.

"Information suggests that the driver lost control of the bus on a straight section of road. The vehicle overturned and eventually skidded to a halt on its side," Wicks said.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the injured had clambered from the wreckage."

Wicks said the people were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were transported to nearby hospitals.
