The situation at the Matholesville informal settlement in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, is under control, metro police said on Wednesday.

"The situation is under control, protesters have stopped protesting," spokeswoman Edna Mamonyane said.

Earlier on Wednesday there were reports that residents of the informal settlement wanted their ward councillor Sebaelo Ntseana removed. They burnt tyres and threw stones on Randfontein Road in Roodepoort, causing traffic problems.

Metro police and the police were on the scene when Ntseana addressed the residents.

"A number of shacks had burnt during the night, which is what sparked the protests. They wanted him to address their issues," Mamonyane said.
