Medics might be to blame for torchings

Disgruntled paramedics are suspected of being responsible for the hijacking and torching of two ambulances on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The KZN health department yesterday said drastic action would be taken if the acts were committed by paramedics, who had threatened to strike.Department spokesman Des-mond Motha said paramedics in uThungulu had responded to two distress calls in Vuma and Eshowe on Monday night."Two ambulances responded to these emergencies, each with a male and female paramedic on board. It was later discovered that these ambulances had been hijacked and burnt," he said.The Public Servants Association, which represents 350 KwaZulu-Natal paramedics, yesterday said some paramedics had embarked on an illegal stayaway, resulting in a total shutdown of services in areas such as Empangeni and Mkhuze."The PSA is not involved in this strike action," the union's spokesman Claude Naiker said.He said many paramedics had been intimidated into staying away.Naiker said the union was in dispute with the department and had embarked on legal protest action by picketing two weeks ago...
