Two brothers who were jailed in their teens, have been freed from a Kwa-Zulu Natal prison after spending over a decade for crimes they did not commit.

Sboniso and Vusi Mnguni were facing 98 charges relating to armed robbery and impersonating police officers.

The Mngunis were each sentenced to 106 years each and it was expected that they would either get parole in their middle age or die in jail.

But 14-years after they were convicted, the Pietermaritzburg Supreme Court of appeal has dropped the charges against the Mngunis.

According to the SABC, the court found there was insufficient evidence as the original case docket was no longer available.

“I’m quiet relieved because I think this is the beginning of a new journey. We were arrested for something which we had nothing to do with. Charges that were levelled against us, we have never admitted to those charges from the beginning because we knew nothing about them,” says Sboniso Mnguni.

The brothers added they were most looking forward to seeing their mother and aunt as they had suffered from high blood pressure amongst other illnesses since they went to jail.

The Mngunis will also seek out legal counsel regarding their wrongful imprisonment.
