Children lose father in shooting

Thandayiphi Cwele's two children returned from their South Coast school holiday to an empty room at the notorious Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Sunday night. Their 45-year-old father, whom they lived with so they could be close to school, was the latest victim of the turf war at the hostel.Community activist Vanessa Burger said Cwele had previously survived two attempts on his life, received threats, had had to flee his room and had allegedly suffered police torture. At about 1pm on Sunday, as he was returning to Glebelands, he was attacked and chased by an unknown gunman."As he ran across the road a bullet struck him in his left shoulder, exiting near his heart. He fell and died instantly at Glebelands' entrance," Burger said.Residents claim that the clashes are over a lucrative "room control" scam in which residents are forced to pay bribes of between R20 and R50 a month. In May, after several attempts on his life and death threats, another resident and key witness in a murder trial, Sipho Ndovela, was shot dead outside the Umlazi Magistrate's Court before he could call his police escort to fetch him.Three days later, a 30-year-old man was shot dead at the hostel, prompting KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni to deploy police officers to the Glebelands area."So, where were the police, apart from the many units crawling the vicinity after Cwele was shot, when it was too late?" said Burger"Where were the static deployments at Jeena's, Reunion, MegaCity and other killing hotspots, requested by the provincial commissioner? At what stage are the provincial task team's investigations into all these killings? Where is justice for Glebelands?"KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said officers had been at the hostel on Sunday."Police were deployed to monitor the hostel and they are at the hostel daily. The deceased was shot outside the hostel."The Umlazi cluster task team was tasked to investigate hostel cases."We can confirm an incident in which 45-year-old Thandayiphi Cwele was fatally shot by unknown suspects at Ezimbuzini area near the supermarket. The motive is unknown at this stage," he said...
